What is a liquidation map, and is it real data?

A liquidation map shows the price levels where leveraged positions would be force-closed. The level prices are exact - they come from the exchange's own liquidation formula, roughly entry x (1 - 1/leverage) for a long. What no map can know is how much size sits at each leverage tier, because no exchange publishes that. Every liquidation map on the market, paid ones included, therefore models that part from open interest and assumptions about trader behaviour. We label ours an estimate everywhere it appears and publish a track record so the model can be checked rather than trusted.

How accurate are liquidation heatmaps?

The honest answer is that almost nobody publishes the check, so most claims are unverifiable. We score our own map walk-forward on public history: for each bar we rebuild the map using only earlier data, take the nearest predicted magnet, and look forward a fixed window to see whether price traded to it. Crucially, every reach is compared with a baseline - how often price covered the same distance in the opposite direction, where the map predicts nothing. The published figure is the difference between the two, because a level 0.5% away is reached by noise alone and a raw hit rate would be a vanity metric. Why is there no liquidation map for forex or stocks?

Accepted Answer

Because the data that makes one possible does not exist for those markets. A liquidation map needs publicly reported open interest and a venue-defined liquidation formula; crypto perpetual futures have both, spot forex is over-the-counter with no central open interest, and equity margin calls depend on each broker's rules and on portfolios nobody can see. Drawing a liquidation map for EURUSD would therefore be fabrication. Instead we show a stop-cluster map for those markets: the swing highs and lows where protective stop orders typically rest. The levels are measured from real price structure; how much size waits there is not observable, so it is shown only as a relative weight and never as a currency amount.

How do traders actually use a liquidation map?

Two ways, and the second matters more than the first. As a target: clustered forced exits are fuel, so when price reaches a dense shelf the triggered orders push it further the same way, which is why moves often accelerate into these levels rather than stalling at them. And as a stop-placement check: the densest shelf is precisely where everyone else's stop sits, which makes it the level most likely to be swept by a wick before price continues in the original direction. Placing a stop just beyond a heavy cluster, rather than just inside it, is the single most practical use of the map.
