Question 1

What is Bitcoin dominance (BTC.D)?

Accepted Answer

Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's share of the total cryptocurrency market capitalisation, expressed as a percentage. If the whole crypto market is worth $2.4 trillion and Bitcoin accounts for $1.35 trillion, dominance is about 56%. Traders watch it because it separates two very different situations that look identical on a Bitcoin chart alone: money entering crypto and concentrating in Bitcoin, versus money rotating out of Bitcoin into altcoins. Dominance answers where capital is going inside the market, not whether the market is going up.

Question 2

Does falling BTC dominance mean altcoin season?

Accepted Answer

Not on its own, and this is the most common misreading of the indicator. Dominance is a ratio, so it can fall for two opposite reasons: altcoins rising faster than Bitcoin (bullish rotation), or Bitcoin falling faster than altcoins in a broad decline. The direction only becomes meaningful when you pair it with Bitcoin's own price. Bitcoin up with dominance down is the genuine broadening that traders call altseason; Bitcoin down with dominance down is a market-wide sell-off in which altcoins are being hit hardest. TraderAI states that pairing explicitly instead of leaving you to infer it.

Question 3

How accurate is this BTC dominance chart, and where does the data come from?

Accepted Answer

The headline dominance figure is the one published by CoinGecko, CoinPaprika or CoinLore - whichever answers first - computed across their full universe of coins, so it matches what other charting platforms quote. The historical line is different and we label it as such: no free data source publishes total crypto market capitalisation over time, so the daily series is derived from the market caps of the largest coins we can fetch. That makes its shape faithful - it turns exactly when Bitcoin starts out- or underperforming the majors - while its level sits several points above the published figure, because thousands of small coins are not in the denominator. The page shows that measured offset rather than hiding it, and the series is always built from a single provider so a fallback can never introduce a false step.

Question 4

What are TOTAL, TOTAL2 and TOTAL3?

Accepted Answer

They are the crypto market's aggregate capitalisations, and the difference between them is what makes them useful. TOTAL is every coin combined. TOTAL2 removes Bitcoin, so it shows what the rest of the market is worth. TOTAL3 removes both Bitcoin and Ethereum, leaving the broad altcoin complex. Reading them together separates a rally that only Bitcoin is having from one the whole market is participating in: TOTAL rising while TOTAL3 is flat means the gains are concentrated at the top, whereas TOTAL3 leading is the signature of a genuine altcoin expansion.
